| Living Style The white whales have the capacity to
dive to a depth of 1300 to 2100 feet. At the time of hunting for food they can
dive for up to15 minutes. The muscular flap which covers the single blow hole
of the white whale is contracted at the time of opening of the blow hole for
spouting and breathing.
The white whales are slow in swimming having the
capacity of swimming 3 to 9 kph. But in short burst their speed increases up to
22 kph for 15 minutes. The voice of these whales is so noisy that it can be
easily distinguished even while being above water levels.
They use this voice in
communicating wit other whales. The voice varies in types like clicks, whistles,
squeals etc. At the time of making noise the shape of fatty changes shape. The
Arctic habitat of these white whales overlaps with the habitat of the narwhal.
They migrate to the south for warm water during the winter season.
They
sometimes head to salty waters where rivers and seas meet. It is also to be
noted that white whales may sometimes migrate with other types of whales. White
female whales take up to 15 month to give birth to their babies. The baby is
born in the warm surface or in thin waters with head or tail first.
Directly
after being born, and with the help of their mother, the babies go up in order
to take their first ever breath of fresh air. Normally they give birth to the
single ones where as the twins are rare. It takes 6 years to be white in color
as the pigment fades slowly.
The milk of the mother is almost 30% fat-laden and
fed to the calves up to 12 to 24 months. It takes 7 to 9 years to the calves to
reach the maturity level.
