Difficulties Faced

Apart from killer whales and the polar bears the white whales are hunted by the few Arctic-dwelling tribes. These hunters most le make these calves as their pray. Though the life span expectancy of these whales is 25 to 30 years, but they are killed by the hunters before that. The white whale population on earth is about 40000 to 80000.

The pods are threatened by the pollution in water and the hunters as well. But white whales in certain areas like St. Lawrence, Cook Inlet and Alaska are classified as endangered. These marine animals come from Animalia Kingdom, and Chordata(vertebrate) phylum having Mammalia class, Cetacea(whales and dolphins) order, Odontoceti(toothed whales) suborder, Monodontidae(absence of dorsal fin and blunt head) family, Delphinapterus Genus and leucas species. They prefer warmer temperature and lower salinity than that of ocean. The top layer of the skin of these white whales is molted due to such type of environment.
The pod of adult males remains far away from the pods of females and calves. But it is difficult to know their social life in winter as the scientist can study their activities in summer only. Though the thickness of the insulating layer of the blubber of white whales is 10 to 15 minuets thick, it varies according to the season and the water temperature.

The calves have the 2.5 cm of blubber but they gain weight with the age. The ice becomes a safeguard for these whales as the hunters can't go below the ice. But it becomes dangerous sometime as they get trapped under ice without breathing. They are threatened by the oil tanker, the ice breaker traffic and hydro-electric development at Arctic waters.
They are the most abundant in Canadian waters. Three of the eight Canadian populations three are endangered. They are Baffin Island (1000 population), Ungava Bay (1000 population) and St. Lawrence River estuary (having 1000 to 1400 population).
